North & South Carolina Injury Risk

Charlotte, NC Personal Injury Lawyer

Injuries create medical costs of $406 billion annually and kill one person every three minutes. Sadly, the states of North Carolina, ranking 19th, and South Carolina, ranking 13th, have more people die from injuries than the majority of other U.S. states. This injury data includes injuries from motor vehicle collisions, gun shot wounds, and broken bones.

The state of North Carolina had adult injury-related deaths for Americans with 66 per 100,000 people suffering injury fatalities.  The total lifetime medical costs due to fatal injury in North Carolina were $58.4 million.

The state of South Carolina had adult injury-related deaths for Americans with 71.7 per 100,000 people suffering injury fatalities. The total lifetime medical costs due to fatal injury in South Carolina were $26.3 million.

There are 10 key injury prevention actions, such as strengthening seat belt, booster seat and motorcycle helmet laws, among others and published a listing of the states using some preventative policies. The report offers conclusions that the injury prevention problem has not received as much attention as it warrants.

  • Seat belts saved an estimated 69,000 lives from 2006 to 2010;
  • Motorcycle helmets saved an estimated 8,000 lives from 2005 to 2009;
  • Child safety seats saved around 1,800 lives from 2005 to 2009;
  • The number of children and teens killed in motor vehicle crashes dropped 41 percent from 2000 to 2009; and
  • School-based programs to prevent violence have cut violent behavior among high school students by 29 percent.
While no states adopted all 10 recommendations, California and New York passed nine of them. Some states are concerned about approving some suggestions, fearing perceptions of being overprotective in our individualistic society. However, with 50 million people being treated for injuries annually, more than 180,000 Americans die each year from their injuries. The leading causes of injuries involve the “usual suspects.” Falls, violence, poisonings and vehicle crashes lead the list of injury producers.
