The South Carolina counties of York, Chester and Lancaster counties ended the Labor Day holiday with no fatalities on the road.

Across the state it was reported by the S.C. Department of Public Safety that eight people died on highways over Labor Day weekend. These incidents involved three motorcyclists and two were pedestrians, according to the news release on Tuesday morning.

State officials note a slight decrease in highway deaths statewide since the beginning of 2013 in comparison to last year.

Of those people who have died in cars this year, the department says more than half were not wearing seat belts.

Preliminary statistics from the department show that York and Lancaster counties have experienced fewer road fatalities in 2013 than in the past three years during the same time period of Jan. 1 to Sept. 2. While Chester County’s road death toll is higher so far in 2013 than in 2012 and 2011 during the same time period.
