Five people were injured when an SUV slammed into the back of a Toyota Prius, pushing it into a tractor-trailer carrying a mobile home on I-485 in south Charlotte last Wednesday afternoon.

Firemen worked to pull victims trapped inside the Toyota Prius at the scene on the I-485 inner loop just past Providence Road toward Rea Road.

A man was traveling in a Prius with his girlfriend, and another woman. The driver of the Prius stated that he was traveling with the mobile home in front of them. Both the mobile home and the Prius had pulled off of the road into the grass to fix the wrapping on the mobile home.

An SUV entering I-485 from the on-ramp never merged in a traffic lane, and slammed into the back of the Prius. Which jammed the small car under the flatbed in front of him. Had this flatbed not been supported bu two metal beams on the framing the 3 people in the Prius most likely would not have made it.

The driver suffered five broken ribs, a broken arm and leg and a broken t-11 in his back, one passenger shattered her ankle, and the other has a broken foot, broken ankle and a cracked left femur.

Charlotte NC Large Truck/Tractor Trailer Lawyer

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has reviewed states nationwide to certify trucks that carry hazardous materials are meeting or going beyond the federal and state standards for transporting such materials in a safe and effective manner.  The findings showed 12 states with the best programs that promote hazmat safety; Ohio, New York, California, Colorado, Illinois, South Carolina, Kentucky, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Texas, and West Virginia.

These states were put at the top of the list due to the offered programs and practices in several areas. The state of South Carolina offers prevention and safety efforts, such as offering training and safety courses for drivers, manufacturers, and shipping companies that make, transport, or use hazardous materials. Also included were efforts to enforce hazmat regulations, such as permits and inspections, and efforts to reduce the risk of injury to drivers, rescue workers, and the community if a truck accident did release of hazardous materials. Finally, the top states were rated based on the overall ability to decrease the number of hazardous-materials-related trucking accidents in the past five years.
