The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has reviewed states nationwide to certify trucks that carry hazardous materials are meeting or going beyond the federal and state standards for transporting such materials in a safe and effective manner. The findings showed 12 states with the best programs that promote hazmat safety; Ohio, New York, California, Colorado, Illinois, South Carolina, Kentucky, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Texas, and West Virginia.
These states were put at the top of the list due to the offered programs and practices in several areas. The state of South Carolina offers prevention and safety efforts, such as offering training and safety courses for drivers, manufacturers, and shipping companies that make, transport, or use hazardous materials. Also included were efforts to enforce hazmat regulations, such as permits and inspections, and efforts to reduce the risk of injury to drivers, rescue workers, and the community if a truck accident did release of hazardous materials. Finally, the top states were rated based on the overall ability to decrease the number of hazardous-materials-related trucking accidents in the past five years.
